Principals Report
Dear Partners in Mission,
Hope that you are well and have enjoyed a rewarding week.
As Term 3 draws to a close, we take this opportunity to reflect on the collective efforts of our wonderful St Justin’s community. Together, we continue to nurture our students in Faith, Learning, and Wellbeing—all grounded in our Vision for Learning and underpinned by our four key pillars: Challenge, Connection, Engagement, and Student Ownership.
Thank you to our staff for their outstanding service and unwavering dedication to our students. Their commitment is deeply appreciated, and together we look forward to continuing this important and privileged work as we head into Term 4.
Last Saturday, many of our students received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St Mary MacKillop Parish. It was a joyful, faith-filled celebration, and a true blessing to witness our students embracing this sacred Sacrament of Initiation.
A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Fenato, Mrs Smith, Mrs Pickett, Mr Cartwright, Mr Russo, and all staff who supported the candidates in their preparation and ongoing faith formation.

"Confirmation is the sacrament that seals us with the gift of the Holy Spirit, empowering us to live as courageous witnesses of Christ."
Congratulations also to the Year 12 students at St Benedict’s Catholic College, who completed their formal schooling on Wednesday. With the HSC now in focus, we extend our best wishes to each student for success in their exams and the exciting journeys that lie ahead. The Graduation Mass, Presentation, and Awards Ceremony were fitting celebrations of their accomplishments, and a tribute to the support of their families and teachers.
This afternoon, we were delighted to welcome grandparents and special guests for our Grandparents Day celebrations. The event began with Open Classrooms, followed by a Liturgy and a chance to share 2nd Break together.

"Grandparents are a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a whole lot of best friend — their love is timeless, and their wisdom priceless."
Thank you to Mrs Fenato and all staff involved in organising such a meaningful and memorable day. A special thank you to Mrs Giewald for her outstanding efforts in running the Book Fair in the Library—her passion for promoting quality literature continues to inspire our students.
Looking ahead to Term 4, I will be taking leave from Weeks 1 to 5. During this time, Mrs Billet will serve as Acting Principal.
As we enter the school holiday break, I encourage everyone to take this time to rest and reconnect with loved ones. Thank you for your ongoing support and collaboration throughout the term. We look forward to welcoming students and families back on Monday, 13 October, for the beginning of Term 4.
Take care, and enjoy the break.

Peace Be With You
These are the words that the risen Jesus used in greeting and we repeat each time we gather as the Eucharistic community—the body of Christ. A desire for how we wish to be with each other and in the world.
In a world that often feels fractured, loud, and relentlessly chaotic, the concept of peace can seem like a distant and fragile dream. We are bombarded daily with headlines of conflict, images of division, and the constant hum of global unrest. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, to believe that peace is a monumental task, a political ideal achievable only by nations and leaders. Yet, from a spiritual perspective, true and lasting peace begins in the quietest, most sacred place: within the human heart.
Peace is not merely the absence of war; it is the presence of an inner stillness that can hold the world's turmoil without being consumed by it. This is the peace that transcends understanding, the one that we cultivate through intentional practice. It is found not by silencing the world's noise, but by finding a deeper, more resonant desire within ourselves—a desire of calm, compassion, and unwavering hope. This is being and living in relationship with God, the source from which all other forms of peace flow.
When we are centered in God, our actions, words, and even our mere presence become instruments of love and peace. We are able to see the shared humanity in those we might otherwise consider "other." We can listen without judgment, respond with empathy, and seek common ground instead of drawing lines. The path to a peaceful world is not paved with grand gestures alone, but with the millions of small, daily acts of kindness, forgiveness, and understanding that spring from a peaceful soul.
To a world in turmoil, the spiritual perspective offers a radical truth: the most powerful revolution begins not in the streets, but in the sanctuary of the heart. By cultivating our own inner peace, we contribute to a collective field of peace that can transform the world, one breath, one thought, one act of love at a time.
Take some time in stillness and silence to be in relationship with God and to cultivate your own inner peace.
Where and how are you called to be instruments of peace in your life?
Reflect on the words of St Francis of Assisi. What does each one look like for you?
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

PB4L Update

Why the Zones of Regulation?
At school, student success is not only about learning academics—it also depends on how well students can manage their emotions and responses in different situations. The Zones of Regulation is a curriculum designed to support students in developing these important self-regulation skills.
Using a cognitive behaviour approach, our students will engage in learning activities that help them:
- Recognise and name their feelings and levels of alertness.
- Identify which “Zone” they are in (each Zone is represented by a colour).
- Build a personal “toolbox” of strategies to manage their emotions and behaviour.
Over the coming weeks, we will be explicitly teaching students how to identify their Zone and use strategies that help them feel in control and ready to learn.
We encourage parents and carers to talk with their children about the Zones and use this shared language at home—it can be a powerful way to support consistency between home and school.

Stage 3 - Week 8 Learning
Year 6 Spirituality Day
On Friday the 12th of September, the Year 6 students participated in a spirituality day in preparation for the Confirmation the following weekend.
The day was an opportunity for the students to connect with their Catholic faith, strengthen their relationships with each other, and celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation.
Supported by our Year 10 friends from St Benedict’s the students were led through activities and experiences that draw on the story of Pentecost and the significance of receiving the Holy Spirit as a confirmed member of the Catholic church community.
The sausage sizzle was a treat also!
A big thank you to the Year 6 teachers for their work throughout the day! To Mrs Flores and Mr White from St Benedict’s for their support, and to the Year 10 students who ran the groups and cooked our BBQ; a sincere thank you!
Congratulations to all our newly confirmed Year 6 students! May the Holy Spirit guide you throughout your life and be a source of strength in all new endeavours.

Holiday Reading Adventures Beyond the Page
As the holidays begin, it’s a wonderful chance to remind ourselves that reading isn’t only about turning pages — it’s about opening doors to new places, people, and ideas. Stories can come alive in everyday family life, and some of the best adventures happen when reading feels fun, flexible, and connected to the world around us.
Thank you to all the families who visited our book fair! If you couldn't make it or just want to see more of the fantastic books available, you're in luck. Our online book fair is open for more book-browsing and ordering until Friday 10th October. Click on this link or scan the QR code.
Here are some ideas to inspire reading in your family over the two-week break:
Reading Through Experiences
Link stories to your family’s holiday activities. Heading to the beach? Bring along a seaside adventure. Camping in the backyard? Pair it with a survival story. Visiting grandparents? Try a book about families and memories.
Parent Tip: Before or after the outing, talk about how the book connects to your child’s experience. For example: ‘The character was nervous about sleeping in a tent — did that remind you of our camping trip?’ This helps children see books as a way of understanding their own lives.
Themed Reading Journeys
Make reading playful by creating a reading itinerary for the week. Each day is a different destination:
- Day 1: Read a book set in another country
- Day 2: Choose a funny story
- Day 3: Read under a blanket with a torch
- Day 4: Find a book with an animal as the main character
- Day 5: Try a comic or graphic novel
- Day 6: Listen to an audiobook or podcast
- Day 7: Visit your local library or bookshop and choose a new book
- Day 8: Read a picture book (yes, even older kids!)
- Day 9: Swap a book with a friend or family member
- Day 10: Find a nonfiction book about something you love
Parent Tip: Make a chart, map or passport and let your child tick off their progress. Variety keeps reading fresh and encourages children to try new types of stories while still enjoying their favourites.
Multimodal Reading
Reading comes in many forms — and they all count! Graphic novels, magazines, recipe books, and instruction guides all build different skills. Audiobooks and podcasts are also great for long car rides or quiet afternoons.
Parent Tip: Let your child choose a mix — maybe a graphic novel for fun, a recipe book to cook from, and a magazine about their favourite hobby. This shows them that reading can be as diverse as their interests.
Reading as Connection
Flip the usual roles and let your child recommend a book to you. Read it and talk about it together.
Parent Tip: Visit your local library or bookshop together and choose books for each other. Ask open-ended questions, like ‘Which character do you think I’ll like best?’ or ‘What surprised you most about the story?’ This makes reading feel like a shared adventure rather than a solo task.
Book Talks
Beyond finishing a book, it’s important to check children are understanding what they read. This doesn’t need to be a test — it can be fun and conversational.
Parent Tip: Try asking your child questions like:
- What was the most important thing that happened in the story?
- Why do you think the character made that choice?
- If you were in the story, what would you do differently?
You can also encourage them to draw a favourite scene, predict what might happen next if there was a sequel, or retell the story in their own words.
Whether it’s through a graphic novel, a story read under the stars, or a trip to the library to find something new, holiday reading can be one of the simplest — and most memorable — adventures for families. This break, why not pack a few books alongside the sunscreen and snacks, and see where stories take you?
Happy Reading!

OVERVIEW OF INDIVIDUAL TRIAL NOMINATION SPORTS & PROCESS FOR PARENTS/CARERS

CEDoW GALA DAYS
Selection Process
Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) organised Sport Gala Days provide our students with a chance to participate in friendly games as part of a St Justin’s team, competing against other local Catholic Primary Schools. These days are designed to be enjoyable, allowing students to have fun with their peers while applying the skills they've learned in Sports lessons in a fun competitive setting.
Throughout their sports lessons this year, students will be given the opportunity to express interest in participating in the upcoming Gala Days and need to nominate themselves. Mr Hawkins, the sports teacher, will observe all nominated students during their sport lessons to assess their understanding of the game rules and their demonstration of good sportsmanship, which will assist with the team selection process. Preference is given to Year 6 and Year 4 students for teams and if there are additional spots these are then filled by Year 5 and Year 3 students who have expressed their interest in participating. This ensures that students get an opportunity to attend a gala day (should they wish to) every 2 years.
If your child has been invited to participate in a St Justin’s Gala Day Team you will receive a Compass Event Notification for parents’ permission closer to the event date. Please note that students attending these Gala Days will require parental transportation to and from the venue. Additionally, events like these rely on parent volunteers to ensure their success, as without parent help we would be unable to support the number of teams in each day.
Upcoming Gala Days:
Term 3
St Justin’s are also looking forward to participating in other Gala Day style events this year that are competitive and not organised by our CEDoW. These days ARE competitive and therefore teams for these will be picked on student ability and skill in the sport. Students will be offered the opportunity to nominate themselves to trial for these events and teams will be organised by Mr Hawkins and Ms Young. If your child has been selected in a competitive sporting team, you will receive a Compass Event notification for parental permission closer to the event date. These days will incur a fee, to help cover the cost of the team registration. Parents will also be required to transport their children to and from the venue.
Upcoming Competitive Sporting Days: (Small fees payable)
Term 4
- Oz Tag - 31st October 2025 (Camden)
St Justin’s School Sporting Events
Upcoming School Sporting Events:
- Next level competitive pathway for selected students
Primary Students Diocesan Representative Sporting Pathways
Students participating in the representative pathway events are highly skilled athletes, selected based on a range of criteria. This includes years of experience in their chosen sport, representative achievements, sporting club affiliations, and notable sporting accomplishments. These trials are not gala days or school-based carnivals. They are not designed for students “to come and try or for the experience” They are designed specifically for elite athletes who have demonstrated exceptional talent and are aiming to progress to the next level of competition; Regional→State→National. These are organised and run outside of our school, we just provide the information for the when and where of the event.
Parents will need to nominate their child for the 2026 year during the nominations period which opens from 2nd September to November 2025.
Upcoming Diocesan Representative Sporting Trial Dates for 2025
These upcoming trials are for selected students from the 2025 Diocesan Representative Sports Pathway who have already been nominated by their parents in 2024. These nominations are reviewed by CEDoW sport selectors unless St Justin’s have been asked to run an in school trial to gain further insight into nominated student abilities.
If your child has been selected by CEDoW Sport you will receive a Compass Event Notification for parent permissions closer to the event date. Please note these are CEO run events and therefore no St Justin’s staff members attend and students who attend will require parental transportation to and from the venue.
2026 Representative Sport Pathway Trial Nomination Information
Each year primary school children have the opportunity to trial for Wollongong representative teams, for the following summer and winter sports: Basketball, Tennis, Cricket, Touch, Softball, Football (Soccer), Rugby League (11 years and Open), Rugby Union, Hockey, Netball and Australian Rules. This gives students the opportunity to access higher levels of sporting pathways, representation and opportunities to progress into state representation.
These trials are held annually and provide a pathway for students to the MacKillop selection trials. The selected Wollongong teams’ trial at MacKillop level against the Dioceses of Wagga, Canberra/Goulburn, Sydney and Parramatta.
The Wollongong Diocese nomination process for 2026 will be open in Term 4 2025. Further information will be released closer to the date.
Parents will need to nominate their child for the 2026 year during the nominations period which opens from 1st September to 1st November 2025.

Students return back to school Monday 13th October, 2025.
We take this opportunity to wish all our families a rejuvenating break and we look forward to seeing you all return for Term 4!
Parent Contact Request - School Protocol
Just a reminder to our parent community that all teacher contact requests need to come via our secretaries email info@sjopdow.catholic.edu.au
All emails are forwarded onto the relevant staff member for their review / investigation / action. It also enables the office to include leadership if necessary. We ask that you allow staff a 24hour response time.
Please do not send emails directly to a staff member or via Seesaw as they may not respond in a timely fashion.
Thank you for your support.

Awards System Update
Celebrating Our Students
We’re proud to see so many students earning Blue Merit Awards, a testament to their positive behaviour and effort.
With the increasing number of awards, we are updating how certificates are distributed:
- Blue Merit Award certificates will now be sent digitally via parent email notification. You are welcome to print them at home.
- Special Awards will be presented in the classroom, except for Kindergarten students receiving their 1st Special Award, which will be presented at the Infants Assembly.
- Principal Awards and the Principal Medallion will be presented at school assemblies.
You can view your child’s award progress anytime via Compass Chronicle. We appreciate your continued support in recognising and celebrating the efforts and achievements of our students.
You can view your child’s awards tally using an iPad or laptop (the mobile app has limited features):
How to View Awards on Compass Chronicle
- Open Compass
- Click on your child’s profile
- The Chronicle home page will open
- Click on the “Categories” tab Select “Awards and Merits”
- Change the date range from “This Year” to “All” (top right corner)
- This will now show you all awards received and your child’s total merit points tally.

School Counsellor
As we finish Term 3 and prepare for the final term of the year, it’s a perfect time to start thinking about the exciting changes ahead. Whether your child is moving up to the next grade or preparing to start high school, Term 4 is all about getting ready emotionally, mentally, and practically.
Here are some tips to help ease the transition and make Term 4 a positive experience:
- Start conversations early: Talk about what to expect next year; new classes, teachers, friends, and routines.
- Build confidence: Celebrate effort as well as
- progress and remind your child of their strengths and resilience.
- Keep routines steady: Maintaining good sleep, healthy eating, and regular physical activity supports emotional well-being.
Remember, it’s okay to feel nervous about change. Support is always available, please don’t hesitate to reach out if your child needs extra support.
Best regards,
Amanda Heather

Message from Sr Mary
Hello Everyone,👋
I am running the Seasons For Growth program next term (probably starting in week 2 or 3). It is a small group education program that supports children to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to their experiences of change, loss and grief.
The program is run over 8 sessions with 4-7 participants. Each session takes about 40-50 minutes.
If you would like your child (and if THEY want) to attend, please let me know VIA the office staff. First in first served. 😀

Hi St Justin’s Oran Park,
I wanted to share with you that Dads Speak will be holding our upcoming Charity Day on Saturday, 27th September, from 1–4 pm at Shine Shed South West, Campbelltown.
As you know, our focus is on supporting fathers and families raising children with additional needs, and this free family event will be a great opportunity for local families to come together, connect, and enjoy a day of BBQ, music, activities and more.
Please find attached two versions of our flyer for the Charity Day, feel free to use whichever one works best for sharing with your families.
